API Automation with REST Assured & Robot Framework

Part 10 — graduating from Postman to code-based API automation in your pipeline.

By SixQuality · API Testing

Postman is excellent for exploration and lightweight automation, but for large, long-lived suites that live in version control and run in CI/CD, many teams move to code-based automation. Two outstanding options are REST Assured and Robot Framework.

REST Assured (Java)

REST Assured is a Java library that makes API testing in code readable and expressive, with a fluent given/when/then style. It integrates with JUnit or TestNG, and pairs naturally with Cucumber for BDD-style API scenarios — a great fit for Java teams.

Robot Framework with RequestsLibrary

Robot Framework with its RequestsLibrary offers keyword-driven API automation in a clean, readable syntax without heavy programming. It is approachable for mixed-skill teams, and the same framework can also cover web, SSH, and database testing — one consistent toolset.

The full picture: you learned HTTP, methods, status codes, headers, JSON, and auth; you sent requests and automated them in Postman; now you graduate to code-based suites that live in Git and run automatically. That is a complete, professional API testing workflow.

Conclusion

REST Assured and Robot Framework take API testing from Postman into robust, version-controlled automation that runs on every change. Combined with everything earlier in this series, you now have an end-to-end path from HTTP basics to a CI/CD-integrated API test suite.
